Yonanthan Abreu, 23, of the Bronx, was charged Tuesday, Feb. 26, with criminal possession of stolen property and assault, both felonies, said Kieran O'Leary, spokesman for the Westchester County Police.

The incident began when Westchester County Police investigators at the Real Time Crime Center alerted officers on patrol at approximately 1:50 p.m.of an allegedly stolen Honda CRV that was traveling on the Hutchinson River Parkway near Mamaroneck Avenue in White Plains.

O'Leary said the patrol officers were able to track down the vehicle, attempted to stop the driver, who failed to comply and sped off.

The driver continued to the exit ramp leading to I-287 when he lost control, crossed both lanes of Westchester Avenue, crashing through a fence, rolling the car over.

Abreu ran from the scene after the stolen car he was riding in flipped on eastbound Westchester Avenue after it exited the northbound Hutchinson River Parkway at a high rate of speed, O'Leary said.

When the vehicle came to rest on the median between Westchester Avenue and I-287, Abreu climbed out and ran across all eastbound and westbound lanes of I-287 with Westchester County Police officers pursuing him on foot. A county officer was injured during that pursuit and subsequent arrest, he added.

Abreu suffered minor injuries in the crash. He was treated and released at Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla and was held overnight at county police headquarters in Hawthorne for arraignment today.

The driver of the vehicle suffered more serious injuries in the crash and was admitted to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla.

Charges are pending.
